2014 was in my mind a good tech year. For me the biggest tech of 2014 was Android Wear. The introduction of the newest smart watches has been one of the best creations of the past year, that along with all the new internet connected devices created something we had not seen before. So what is 2015 going to give us compared to 2014?
I think 2015 is going to be the year of evolvement and we are not going to see many "new" products. Apple watch has been announced, Android wear has been announced. Apple and Google for the car industry has been announced. Google Glas has moved out of Beta and Microsoft announces their Holo Lens along with Windows 10. This year is going to improve upon tech from previous years. Devices and tech reserved for the geeky part of the worlds population is going to be commercialized this year. Some of my highlights for 2015 is the following:
2014 was definitely the year for wearables but it was not until late in the year that it showed its potential for becoming mainstream. Smart watches has been reserved for the geeky part of the people, i see similarities in wearables the same way smartphones did for people when they first arrived. Back then people could not understand why i needed a big phone with a color touch screen when i could just use my computer for that stuff? At the moment people are kind of laughing or finding it funny that there is a need for a smart watch, why do i need it? Why can i not just use my phone? It is problably not easy to understand until you actually get one and try it for a period of time. The smarwatch has been my best new tech of 2014, being a big time saver for checking notifications, ease dropping on incoming SMS´s and checking calendar events. I can control my smart house with it. Start timers, set reminders and create calendar entries. With the launch of Apples watch and the new Android Wear lineups i think this is going to be one of the big techs of 2015.
The number of IOT devices are increasing everyday. Crowd founding communities like Indiegogo and Kickstarter has really made IOT devices a reality and commercialized many of them. Your home and things around you is getting smarter day by day and 2015 is going to be no exception in the creations of new IOT´s. Doorbells, coffee machines, Smart plants, doorlocks, toilets, shoes, clothes, personal assistant robots, vacuum cleaners and health oriented devices. And best of all most of them are now going to be able to talk together. We will also see an increase on the use of algorithms and code for "Big data" data collection. This is where the devices get a mind of their own learning from us to serve us, Elon Musk creator of Tesla has expressed that this area is worrying him. Artificial intelligence could potentially harm human beings at some point he has said. Many of the new IOT products of 2015 will be supporting Apple Homekit & Health Kit, and are going to become mainstream just because of that.
3D printers have been popular for years now, but it is not until recently that i have noticed that it´s become a thing among most people. Until now 3D printers has been reserved for those genuinely interested, but i am guessing that we are going to see new and cheaper models being available for most of us. I have decides that this year is going to be the year that i am going to get my self a 3D printer. Why do you say? Well we see more and more communities evolving where 3D printing is their main course of business. The times where a plastic phone case was something you bought online and having to wait for it to show up on your doorstep is slowly fading away. Now you are able to purchase a model and print it in your own color and quality. The good thing is that it is available right away. You will be able to go from a 3D sketch to a real life product within a couple of hours. How many times have you not been in a situation where a plastic part has broken and ended up making your device unusable. This time around you can create this part from scratch and take it in to use again.
Google Glas officially went out of of beta just recently and is aiming to become a consumer product. Tony Fadel one of the creators of the Apple ipod who initially started Nest (now a part of Google) has been nominated to chief of Glas. Microsoft has recently announced Windows 10, which is going to save them from the Windows 8 pain. In relation to Windows 10 Microsoft has announced their plans for the Microsoft Holo Lens. The lens is a Holographic VR headset creating digital images on real life surfaces.
Android Cardboard brings VR to everyone at a ridiculous low cost price. Occulus rift, Samsung and OnePlus VR headsets are going to be very popular in 2015.
Tesla has shown all other car manufacturers that technology within the inside of the car also matters. 2015 is going to show us numerous new dials and borderless screens in all kinds of forms and shapes replacing the old mechanical gauges. First one off might be Audi in their new 2015 Audi TT.
And with Android Auto And IOS for cars i bet we are going to see a lot of new vehicles with a better user interface on both their car system and also the infotainment system.
In combination with these two systems and most on Android due to its openness i think we will se more dash cams and virtual reality heads up displays nav products.
Drones are not reserved just for the people interested in drones anymore. Drones for some are still hobby off course but for many drones are slowling turning in to a tool for other hobbies; Action sports, film & photography or for house realtors. The drones of this era does not require any special piloting skills and can be launched by pressing a button on a smartphone only the to execute pre designed shooting scenes. They are full off sensors and are equipped gyro-stabilized cameras shooting in 4K video. Pricing for the more advanced models are dropping allowing normal consumers to get their hands on these flying wonders.
We are going to see new innovative tech this year as any other year but nothing breaking any boarders as far as i can see. The phone industry is going to continue to push out new units some with new design with regards to form and shape, maybe a bit more flexible than before but all in all there is not going to be an Amazon Fire phone. The most interesting device at this point so far in 2015 is problably the Yota phone 2 bringing us two screens on one device.
I am looking forward to the year of 3D printing and to the development in the Android Wear division and how Apple watch may be mainstreaming the wearables division, i just hope the battery life is better than reported so far. So what do you think of 2015? Am i missing something? Please comment below, the answer lies in 2016 :)
